What is wire mesh roll?
Wire mesh (known in Turkish mills as “telora”) is screen made by weaving metal wires at set spacings and supplied in rolls. In mills it is used on sieves in the grain cleaning section, coarse pre-cleaners, scourer and aspirator screens and various separating surfaces. Being supplied in rolls, it can be cut to size and fitted to different sieve frames.
Dimensions that decide the choice
- Aperture: the clear gap between two wires; it decides what passes and what stays on top. Pre-cleaning uses apertures that hold back coarse impurities; fine separation uses apertures that let small seeds and broken grain through.
- Wire diameter: determines strength and wear life. Thicker wire is stronger but reduces the open area at the same aperture.
- Material: stainless steel is preferred for food contact and humid conditions; galvanised wire is a more economical option.
- Weave: plain weave is the most common; square or rectangular openings are chosen to suit the application.
Why open area matters
How much of the screen surface is open directly affects capacity. Screens with a high open area pass more product on the same surface. Balancing wire diameter against aperture finds the right point between capacity and strength.
Fitting and care
- Fit the mesh straight and taut on the frame; loose mesh lowers efficiency and tears quickly.
- Clean blinded openings regularly.
- Holed or torn screen lets impurities through and should be replaced at once.
