What is a grate magnet?
A grate magnet (also called a separator or bar magnet) is made of strong permanent magnet bars in stainless steel tubes, spaced out on a frame. As product flows between the bars, ferrous pieces are drawn to and held on the bar surfaces.
Where it is used
- Hopper and bin inlets: before product enters storage or a machine,
- Feed openings of separators and pre-cleaners,
- Bulk intake points: where product unloaded from trucks is first received,
- Inlets of finished product bins and packing hoppers.
How it differs from a bullet magnet
A bullet magnet is fitted in line on a gravity spout. A grate magnet is applied to wider openings, hopper mouths and square or rectangular ducts. Several bars cover a wide area so all the product passes close to a magnet. The two are not alternatives but complementary equipment protecting different points of the line.
Points for good performance
- Bar spacing: narrow spacing holds better but can slow flow; choose by product and capacity.
- Rows: two staggered rows of bars increase the chance of product contacting a magnet.
- Cleaning: clean collected metal regularly; drawer designs make cleaning easier.
