What is a chain coupling?
A chain coupling connects two facing shafts, such as a motor and gearbox or a gearbox and machine shaft. A sprocket (hub) is fitted to each shaft; the two sprockets with the same tooth count are brought side by side and a duplex roller chain is wrapped around both and locked. Torque is transmitted from one shaft to the other through the chain.
Benefits
- Simple, robust design: few parts, high torque capacity.
- Easy disconnection: opening the chain’s connecting link separates the shafts without moving them.
- Limited misalignment tolerance: clearance between chain and sprockets accepts small angular and axial misalignment.
- Economical maintenance: worn chain or sprockets can be replaced separately.
Alignment
Although a chain coupling tolerates small misalignment, that does not mean alignment can be neglected. In a misaligned coupling the chain and sprockets wear fast and bearings take extra load. On installation, check the gap between the sprocket faces and that the shafts are on the same axis.
Lubrication and protection
- Lubricate the chain regularly; a dry chain stretches and wears quickly.
- In a mill, flour dust combines with oil into an abrasive paste. A coupling cover keeps oil in, dust out and also improves safety.
- Replace parts when the chain has stretched or sprocket teeth have become pointed.
Send us the shaft diameters and the power to be transmitted and we will supply the right chain coupling.
