What does a scourer do?
Before wheat is milled, the cleaning section removes surface dust, dirt, stalk fragments, micro-organisms and the loose outer bran layer. One of the machines doing this is the scourer. A bladed rotor spins inside it, throwing kernels against the surrounding scourer screen; kernels are cleaned by rubbing against each other and the perforated surface.
The screen’s job
- Abrasive surface: the perforated, rough surface removes dirt and loose bran from the kernel.
- Separation: the loosened dust and bran particles pass out through the holes while clean grain moves on.
- Aspiration: the holes let the machine’s aspiration system draw dust away.
Signs of wear
The scourer screen wears because grain rubs on it constantly. These signs show it is time to replace it:
- rounded hole edges and a smoother surface — cleaning effect drops,
- enlarged or torn holes — whole kernels or broken grain escape,
- loosening and vibration where the screen sits in its frame.
What we need for an order
Scourer screens are usually made as half cylinders (two pieces). To supply the right screen we need the machine make and model, the screen diameter and length and the perforation type. Send us your current screen’s dimensions or a photo and we will supply the right one.
