A PK36 - M8 set for the smooth passage

The PK36 - M8 smooth roll triple set is prepared for the smooth passage of roller mills that combine a 36-rib PK belt with an 8 mm-pitch (M8) timing element. On a smooth passage the roll speed differential is low, and keeping that ratio constant throughout the day keeps flour fineness and sifter loads balanced.

The right order for fitting a timing belt

  1. Isolate the mill and release the tensioner.
  2. Remove the old belt; clean the pulley teeth and grooves with a wire brush.
  3. Check the pulley teeth for wear, burrs or breaks.
  4. Fit the new belt so the teeth fully engage, without forcing it. Never “walk” a timing belt on over the pulley flange; this damages the internal cords.
  5. Set the tension, turn the mill a few revolutions by hand and confirm the belt stays centred on the pulleys.

Why tension matters

A timing belt does not slip, so it does not need as much tension as a ribbed belt. A slack belt can jump teeth and momentarily upset the ratio; an over-tight belt strains the bearings, whines and shortens belt life. Staying at the belt maker’s recommended value is best.

Pulley checklist

  • Are the timing pulley tooth flanks polished or thinned?
  • Are the belt flanges (side discs) bent?
  • Are the groove edges of the ribbed pulley rounded?

If any of these apply, renewing the set is recommended. Altınbaşak supplies the PK36 - M8 smooth roll set to suit your mill model, complete with bushes.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a timing belt jumps a tooth?

The ratio between the rolls is upset for a moment; flour fineness fluctuates and the belt teeth may be damaged. Low tension or worn pulley teeth are the usual causes.

Can the belt be forced on over the pulley edge?

No. This damages the tensile cords inside the timing belt; release the tensioner and fit it properly.

What is the difference between the break and smooth PK36 - M8 sets?

The profiles are the same, but the pulley ratios differ by passage. The smooth set is chosen for a low speed differential.
