For high-capacity smooth roll mills

As mill capacity grows, roll lengths and drive power on the smooth roll mills grow too. Delivering a low but stable speed differential without slip on these machines needs a wider belt. The PL26 smooth roll triple set is a three-pulley drive with a 26-rib PL belt and pulleys chosen for the smooth-passage ratio.

Fitting a wide belt correctly

A 26-rib belt is about 122 mm wide. The wider the belt, the more even a small angular misalignment over-tensions one edge. Therefore:

  1. Fit the pulleys with their taper bushes and tighten the bushes evenly in turn.
  2. Check alignment at two separate points on the pulley face with a straight edge or laser.
  3. Fit the belt with the tensioner released; never lever it into the grooves with a screwdriver.
  4. Set the tension, run the mill briefly without load, then measure the tension again.

Choosing the belt

The belt’s rib count and length must match the pulley set exactly. In a double-sided drive layout both faces of the belt must be ribbed. Belts from different makers may stretch differently even at the same size; sticking to the same type when replacing keeps the ratio stable.

Symptoms and remedies

  • Wear on one edge of the belt: misalignment; realign the pulleys.
  • Squealing: low tension or worn grooves.
  • Transverse cracks in the belt: ageing or excess heat; replace the belt.

Altınbaşak prepares PL26 smooth roll sets complete with bushes to fit your shafts.

Frequently asked questions

When is the PL26 smooth roll triple set preferred?

On long-roll or high-power smooth roll mills where a PL22 belt cannot carry the load without slipping; the mill design decides.

What does wear on one edge of the belt indicate?

Usually misalignment between the pulleys. If a new belt is fitted without bringing the pulleys into one plane, the problem returns.

What should be watched when fitting the belt?

Fit it with the tensioner released, do not lever it into the grooves, and re-check tension after the first run.
